Manufacturers recall millions of vehicles each year, with safety-related defects potentially putting drivers at risk. Finding out about a recall on your vehicle can be stressful, leaving you wondering what to do next – and if you’ll be left holding the bill for repairs.

Burns Ford of York is here to help! Our service technicians have provided some great information below, including recommended next steps and safety measures. Read on to learn more!

Does My Car Have A Recall?

Finding out about vehicle recalls is one important reason to register your car with its manufacturer. If the automaker files a recall report, you will be notified via first class mail within 60 days (or a “reasonable” amount of time). If you suspect that your car may be affected but haven’t received any recall information, you can contact an authorized Ford dealer near you or the manufacturer directly.

Will I Know If My Used Car Is Recalled?

Many of today’s consumers purchase pre-owned vehicles, choosing this affordable alternative to buying new. But because you are not the vehicle’s original owner, you will not be contacted with safety recall information unless you register your used vehicle. Just like buying a new car, it is crucial to register your used vehicle to ensure you receive updates. You can also search the VIN in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall database.

What Should I Do If My Car Is Recalled?

If your vehicle is recalled, be sure to schedule recall repairs immediately. The official recall letter will detail which safety measures to take, depending on the specific recall. The manufacturer is required by law to present three options:

  1. Repair
If there is an open recall for safety-related defects, your vehicle will be repaired free of charge.
  2. Replacement
If recall repairs of the motor vehicle equipment are not possible, the manufacturer will replace your vehicle with the same (or similar) make and model.
  3. Refund
The manufacturer may decide to refund the vehicle’s purchase price, after factoring in depreciation.
