How to Change a Flat Tire

There’s nothing fun about a flat. Getting stuck on the side of the road during the sweltering summer months likely doesn’t factor into your plans, but blown tires don’t consult your schedule. That’s why it’s important to know what to do if you blow a tire. Burns Ford of York is here to help, offering tips and tricks for safe tire repair on your Ford in York, SC!

Tools Needed to Fix a Flat Tire

Keeping these tools on hand is crucial, but knowing how to use them is even more important! Consult your owner’s manual and familiarize yourself with these tools – especially before setting out on a road trip.
  • Owner’s manual
  • Car jack
  • Lug wrench
  • Spare Tire
  • Flashlight
  • Wheel chocks
  • Emergency warning devices

Flat Tire Repair Steps

Follow these simple steps for repairing a tire:
  1. Park in a safe location. Avoid dirt or grass if possible to prevent the car jack from sinking into the ground. Try to find a flat spot on solid ground to perform a safe tire repair.
  1. Secure your vehicle. Turn off the car, put on the emergency brake and hazard lights, and use wheel chocks (rocks will work in a pinch) to keep the vehicle from rolling. Position them in front of the front wheels when changing a rear tire, or behind the rear tires when changing a front tire.
  1. Loosen lug nuts. Remove the hubcap, then loosen lug nuts slightly by turning the wrench counterclockwise. Do not remove the lug nuts. Simply complete one turn.
  1. Jack up the car. Lift the vehicle at least 6 inches off the ground, consulting the owner’s manual to best position the jack.
  1. Remove the lug nuts and wheel. Be sure to place lug nuts somewhere safe.
  1. Remove the blown tire. Use both hands and be careful, just in case the car drops.
  1. Put on the spare tire. Replace the flat tire with the spare, aligning it with the wheel bolts and putting the lug nuts back on. Tighten them so that the spare stays on, but don’t tighten them all the way yet.
  1. Lower the vehicle. Lower slowly, then remove the jack and wheel chocks. Now tighten the lug nuts as tightly as you can.
Because spare tires are meant to be quick fixes, they’re often smaller than a typical tire and aren’t meant for high speeds or long distances. Once you’re performed these flat tire repair steps, come see us at Burns Ford of York!

Car Maintenance Tips For The Spring Season

For Ford service near Rock Hill, Burns Ford of York is the place to go. Our qualified, experienced service technicians are committed to keeping your vehicle running at peak performance – so schedule your appointment today! more As part of your vehicle’s springtime maintenance schedule, we recommend the following: Rotate tires. All-season tires are great for year-round use, but to extend their tread life, it’s important to rotate them seasonally. Our team will check tire pressure and tread to ensure your tires maintain good traction through the rainy spring months ahead. Replace windshield wipers and refill fluid. Icy windshields result in wiper wear and tear, so it’s a good time to replace them – and refill wiper fluid as well. Get an oil change. If it’s time for your vehicle’s regularly scheduled oil change, schedule Ford service today. While we’re under the hood, we’ll check other fluid levels, too! Test your battery. Extreme temperatures can put extra strain on your vehicle’s battery, so it’s wise to check your battery after winter’s colder weather. Plus, we know that scorching summer temperatures are just around the corner! Wash and wax your vehicle. Dirt and grime can damage your paint job, so give it a thorough wash and wax. Clean your car’s interior, too, while you’re at it! Your car will look as good as it runs – ready to cruise into spring in style! Check suspension and alignment. Wintertime is rough on roads, and frequent driving on bumpy, uneven pavement can affect your vehicle’s suspension and alignment. The start of spring is the perfect time to check, and make adjustments if necessary. Evaluate your brakes. Even if your brakes seem to be functioning normally, our technicians can check brake pad wear to make sure your vehicle is ready for the road ahead.
